I don't think it would be a good investment in paying for directory inclusion only for PR purposes. We would not get so many direct traffics from directory these days. IMO.

I have seen it work fine for clients. I would recommend using various types of links for the best results.

Default Delayed Manual Directory Submission

Again, relying on just one form of link building, rather than an overall link building program will certainly not bring the best possible outcome.

But if you do intend to submit to directories, ensure use a delayed manual directory submission service that spreads out your submissions over a number of weeks.

And don't waste your links by not using the keyphrases that internet users are using on Google, Yahoo and Bing. This is where the power is.

Find out what users are searching for, do some on-page optimization, then use those keyphrases as your title link text for directory submissions (off-page optimization).

I believe I understand what you're trying to say here and in the broad sense it's correct but it's a little confusing...

It is a good idea to optimize your pages for what people are searching for, these phrases are commonly known as keyword phrases. Once you know what keyword phrases people type into their search engine, you should optimize your pages for them and use in the anchor text of links you place on other people's web sites.

Anchor text is the clickable part of the link you see, it's a query ranking indicator. It tells humans and search bots what's coming next. It's by far the most powerful element of link popularity and one that drives the way a web page ranks.

It's also the one part of the link popularity equation we have clarity on from the search engines, here's a quote from the google blog on anchor text:

Quote:
In addition, anchor text influences the queries your site ranks for in the search results.
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...about-how.html

So basically, if you can get links that use your anchor text and point to a page that's been optimized for the phrase, you'll see ranking improvement.

Now - how does this relate to directories? One of the best things about directory submission is the ability to use keyword anchors in your description and/or point to internal pages. I agree you shouldn't only use directories as your sole link buidling tactic but they don't hurt.

Stick to the better directories (BOTW, Joe Ant, Massive Links, etc) and forget about the freebies, they're junk and have little to no algorithmic weight.

Remember...... in order to pass on link popularity, the page your link sits on has to have links pointing to it.

Default Relevant Directories

OK, this is an older thread, and here is what I have learned since my last post in it, some years ago.
RELEVANT directories can do absolute wonders for your website.
For instance, I am a roof cleaner in tampa. Once I stated listing my website in roofing directories, cleaning directories, and Tampa directories, wonderful stuff started to happen for me!
My keywords are roof + cleaning+ tampa. Google see's roofing as relevant to roof, so even though I am not a roofing contractor, their directories are very relevant to me.

Now, I had to do manual submissions, and seek out these directories, but I did from 1 to 3 every evening with a glass of Merlot over a 3 month period.

When submitting, be sure and add your address and phone number if u can, as well as your website., because that directory submission can and will turn into a powerful citation for you in Google Local.

LOL, some of the roofing contractor directories I snuck myself into are page rank 4 or more human edited directories trusted by Google.

Do not waste your money buying automated directory submissions, and quit looking for shortcuts.

Get out the Merlot, and get busy, doing what you know you need to do.

im a little conflicted as to what type of link building to do right now. I had previously had alot of success with guest posting on related site, but even that was affected by the penguin update.

I think the key now is to keep your anchor text varied. Supposedly that is what this Penguin update is about, but no one except G really knows.

Just make sure when you link that you throw some random anchor text in there.

Seo is related to quality contents so if you have good contents and working on them no one can stop to get top ranking.

Free directory submission has low or worst nothing to affect your rankings because search engine don't rely on this method to place your site in SERP.
