All good advice above. Jarmaine touched on it, but pretty much the first resource of offline marketing would be a good business card. Buy them inexpensively in bulk and pass them out everywhere.

What other "ad" do people willingly accept and often keep for years as reference?

These are all good ideas.

Here is one more. I get more word of mouth referrals to my Sculptured Nail Salon by sending thank you notes. I always send them the same day the new client come in. If they were referred by a current client I send them a thank you for the referral. We all look to be thanked when we do something nice. I certainly appreciate all the word of mouth referrals we get. No one takes the time to mail thank yous any more and it makes you stand out from the rest!

One of the biggest reasons a person leaves a business is because they don't feel appreciated.

Peggy makes a great point. Make sure you customer knows that you appreciate them. Also, when sending the thank you, give them incentive to come back, maybe a coupon for a product, or some type of discount.

Default The best form of advertising

You want people to come to YOU. The only way to do that is to become the perceived expert in your field, then back that up with strategic advertising in your tradezone - saturate it, dominate it.

I'll give you an example. A client owns a health food store. Does ok but could do way better. My suggestion to her was to revamp her website and get video on there of several locally-known experts, educating her clients (drive clients to the site). Partner with these experts and you send them business, they send you business. Layer in some targeted cable TV advertising, an occasional mobile texting campaign (for free!), a few select coupons here and there...and voila you are the expert. If you can, always use your advertising to drive people to your website...because there, you can make anything happen you want to - it's your site! Once you accomplish that, then you can get into web crawlers and all sorts of site optimization techniques to drive people outside of your local area to you!!

Good luck -

you can't go wrong with TV.

for less than $2,000 you can be all over primetime in your area for about 3 months.

Hi, I think that banners advertising is the cheapest and most reliable way for propaganda and advertising, set the banner up in your target place...

TV, hands down.

nothing can even come close to the brand awareness generated by TV, for about $1,500.00 you can be on TV 3 networks of your choice (depends on target audience) PRIMETIME almost every night for 3 months.

you can't argue with that, especially if you market high ticket items, where two or three new customers can cover the cost of the airtime and production.

Word of mouth kind of marketing is good. It means you have customers that are very satisfied with your products/ services so for sure they will tell other people!

Word of mouth also has negative effects for a business and not only positive. It's results depend on the feedback of the customers which will spread in just a matter of time. Word of mouth is only a part of advertising and there are much more effective ways than that.
