Once you have a considerable number of followers, share your content now to have more effect. Also share the content on other sites that you share on Pinterest. That will maximize the probability of people viewing your content and thus gaining traffic. Give some time to all your SM activities to yield results.
Social media is all about followers and then sharing your expertise with them.

I don't waste my time with Pinterest, it is a NOFOLLOW site.
Not crazy about "social marketing" like Facebook either. I call it begging, and spamming your friends.
The only thing that matters is if someone does a search for roof cleaning in tampa. That's where I live, and that's what I do.

For a while there I thought Pinterest was another fad, but it seems to have staying power.

I think Pinterest is worth it if you've got images worth sharing. Depending on your business and if you've got high quality images, then I'd say Pinterest is a good move. If not, then perhaps there's another social network where your time is better spent.

Also, last time I checked 80% of Pinterest users were women. Now, that number may have changed, but if you happen to sell a product that caters to women, then you need to be on Pinterest.

I completely agree with the above, it is effective if you have images worth sharing.

Default Effectiveness of Pinterest

I do find it effective enough, and its a very fascinating sites to work on. I do like working on it. But Pinterest has an etiquette policy to work for like it asks you to be authentic, to report to objectionable content, it ask you make your board creative enough not a carbon copy of your website, over here less is more etc.

They might be a hit, but what matters is that people actually purchase them. It is sort of like in the old days having many people in your store looking around but not buying anything.

From a the traditional SEO sense and it being no follow you will not gain link "juice" although it is recorded as a link and will be part of your link profile.

Pinterest is more about the imagery. If you have nice photos and those photos are of interest your target audience be sure to add a description that has keywords and a call to action for your website. You may just beable to drive quality traffic. Fashion, Photography, Art, Style, Hairstylist, home decor, cooking.. These may benefit from pinterest to drive buyers.

add quality content and then you need to follow others that are pinning related products to get any volume.

Promoting your business on social media sites takes time and effort. In the old days you simple advertised in the newspaper or Yellow Pages.
