The Upcoming Importance Of Social Media For SEO
I've been involved in web marketing for about 11 years, 9 of those as a web marketing manager for a small to medium sized subscription based business. I'm now also trying to start something on the side, StartupLeads.
My boss is a member of a CEO group here in Austin, and recently the monthly talk for their group was given by an SEO "guru". I was invited to attend since I handle our SEO efforts, and I wanted to pass along a bit of what I learned.
The most interesting point from the presentation is the following - In terms of SEO, your businesses social media presence will soon have as much weight as your link authority, and eventually it will surpass it.
Google is now looking hard at how many followers you have on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, how many subscribers you have on your YouTube channel, and how many people subscribe to your blog's RSS feed. This makes sense as a very high social media profile is a better indicator of the quality of your business than going out and buying a bunch of links.
This ties into the fact that search is personalized now. My results are going to be different than yours. For example, if I have a Facebook friend who is a Facebook "fan" of a construction company, when I search Google for construction companies that construction company is going to rank higher for me. Who you are, who your friends are, where you are etc. all matter in search now.
Build these social media pages and create a YouTube channel for your business so you can be ahead of the game. For StartupLeads I created a video showing how to run a search on my site to get started. Anything helps.
That's what I learned from the "guru". I was skeptical going in but came away having learned something very valuable, in my view. I wanted to pass it on and try to make myself useful around here. Hope it helps.
