old domains have certain advantages than compared to new domains because search engines feel that they are on the web for long time, serving users the most for what they are looking, trusted and more authoritative.

Correct, domain age is one the the top three factors in determine rankings I would say. It is all about authority, if you have an old domain plus a number of quality links you should good results in the SERPs vs. a new domain with even better links.

Google knows that a new site can spend lots of money and buy great links, hence why they value a domain's age so highly, it is authority.

Keep in mind that search engine algorithms are designed to hand users what they're looking for with the greatest possible frequency. If you spent months writing great content for your new, highly relevant site, it's tough for Google's software to immediately tell the difference between that and unique-but-autogenerated webspam stuffed with keywords. They'll use user data like bounce rate to determine your relevancy over time. It's also probably a way to force you to run PPC for a few months.

They are liked by Google as Google has already indexed them and pages become visible much quickly.

Adding to the great list by christinejoseph

Old domains are less likely to be spam. Most spam sites go full bore until they get cut off by the search engines. Depending on cleverness and luck this can be quick or it can take a while for them to be purged.

Thanks for the great info - I had no idea that the age of a site mattered. It makes very good sense though. Does it help with page rank also?

Older domains tend to rank better but don't be misled into thinking that the domain age itself has anything to do with it. If you listen to Matt Cutts the algorithm doesn't really have domain age built into them. older sites rank better if they use the time to build trust in some way shape or form. if you simply build a site and leave it untouched for a few months it won't rank any better than it did before.

You must actively build links, refresh your content and grow traffic. Your rankings won't change simply by waiting.
