Exclamation Google PageRank: SEO Treasure Or Fool's Gold? What The Experts Say...

One of the most controversial, misunderstood, confusing and debated topics in the SEO universe is the importance of PageRank. But let me be specific here. When I use the term "PageRank", I'm not talking about Google's 0-10 logarithmic toolbar PageRank, which is nothing more than a "superficial beauty contest" vanity tool - very much out-of-date, and does NOT have a direct impact on a site's ranking. That fact was established long ago.

Google Removed PageRank Data From Webmaster Tools

In fact, Google removed PageRank data from Google Webmaster Tools back in October, 2009.

Here's what Google Webmaster Central's Susan Moskwa said about that move...Continue reading Google PageRank: SEO Treasure or Fool's Gold? What the Experts Say...

I am a long way from an SEO expert, but I have had almost 11 years earning online under my belt, with seasons of success. I can tell you with no hesitation that I don't care what Google Experts say, The antiquated 1-10 PR rating is still valuable to this day (in my opinion). There are THOUSANDS of people online that are extremely impresses by your PR rank and that in itself is reason enough for me to work on improving mine. Not everyone reads the SEO press.

People such as yourself who believe in PageRank argue adamantly for it. That's why it's such a hotly debated topic. But I agree with Google on this one. Analytics, conversions and ROI are much more important metrics.

I am not arguing with that, all I am saying is there is more to R.O.I than meets the EYE. Perception is a metric too.

I have to agree, you make a valid point. Perception is indeed a metric.

That would make a great rebuttal article to mine.

In the interest of being fair and open-minded, I'm writing a new article making the case for PageRank. After all, there are always two sides to every story. As always, I'll post the link here when I finish the article.

The article is finished, and I've just been informed by the editor that it will be the featured article in the next issue of SEO-NEWS newsletter, on Thursday, June 9, 2011. No, I haven't changed my position on PageRank, but in the interest of fairness, I decided to play devil's advocate and make the case for the other side.

I think you'll find it an interesting read...I certainly enjoyed writing it.

I agree with you on the fact of page rank. It is one of those subjects that goes both ways. Is it important? Well to some of my clients it is very important, the better their page rank is the better that they think their site is. It has nothing to do with the site in general, only the measurements of the site. You can find many sites out there that are totally useless in their design and much of the information that they post, but have a high page rank due to age, and links coming in that they have built. From my perspective, I would much rather a great site that I know is informing my visitors, than a so so site that has a great page rank.

I couldn't agree more. However, the importance of PageRank to rankings will likely always be a topic of debate at least, as long as PageRank continues to exist as a metric.
