Default Power, Pricing and service demands

Don't forget the velvet hammer when looking at these situations either. Sure Carnegie works (I have read that book three times) but his method works even better when you carry a big stick.

If you cannot find a drop shipper for an item it may be an opportunity that you are overlooking. You cannot compete on price against your own supplier ! Ever.

What you can do is possibly replace the supplier by going direct to the manufacturer. This often sounds harder than it is. You may be surprised. In small business you are best served by being flexible.

Often adding value to the product you want to drop ship will make enough profit to allow you to work in the under $50.00 realm. Or, to put it another way, you may be able to sell some add on items that are less than $50 if the sale is part of a larger sale. This way you can amortize the transaction costs over a larger sale.

Another thought on drop shippers. If you can find two suppliers of a product, the velvet hammer approach will usually get one of them to drop ship. Be nice, be honest and tell them that you will give your business to the one that will accomodate your requests. Even though you may be running a "small" business, you sometimes have more power than you think. This is often overlooked because we allow ourselves to think "small" in business.
