It's important to note that www is a subdomain of domain.com. So technically speaking, you CAN get both www and domain.com to rank well, but like Torka mentioned, they typically both contain the same content.

Google's duplicate content filter won't allow the same content on www and domain.com to show up well in the search results.

Bottom line?
Choose one.

Also, I don't see any duplicate content in this situation. We are not talking about two sets of files with the same content - we are talking about one set of files with two different URLs pointing to the same files.

Plus, I do not believe that Google will blacklist anyone for having duplicate content - the worst they will do is ignore one of them. And by "ignore" I don't mean they will refuse to index one, they will index it but will simply not rank it.

I am open to correction, if any of the above is not true.

I totally agree with you, I want to say the same you said. Google never blacklist duplicate content but if your website is opening with two diffrent-diffrent urls, then may Google count only one or may Google Disallow both the url from search engine.

301 redirect will be the best thing to do and for the duplicate content issue don't bother because 20 to 25% of content in the web is duplicate according to Google.

If you add www. In front of a website, it acts as a hostname which can help with flexibility with DNS, ability to restrict cookies when using multiple subdomains, and more. Whereas non-WWW domains also referred as naked domains do not have a technical advantage.
