There are some people in the world that like to do minimal amounts of work and try to get maximum amount of profit. I think that could apply to the majority of people. However, as we all know SEO is a gray area and does take time to complete. That being said, you can see how this might attract folks who don't have the best of intentions. Example: A client hires a person to do SEO work. The client has little knowledge of SEO but knows that it is an effective way to get advertising. The person hired to do the SEO work has all the data to demonstrate their "expertise". Not knowing that the data given was a complete fraud, the client expects a rise in traffic that doesn't occur or expects to have a higher PR that doesn't happen. Why? because the person hired to do the SEO work fraudulently promised things they know can't be or won't be accomplished and for a high servicing fee. There are no "proving" grounds per say to back up what they have been hired to do and the presented contract will always give them enough "wiggle" room to maneuver out of the responsibility of what was originally contracted to begin with. What's left....a disgruntled client who feels they have been taken advantage of and an SEO'er who lied to get money and did nothing towards due diligence. This scenario happens all the time. I work in SEO and want all potential clients to do research on the person you are contracting with to do SEO. Don't just rely on the info they produce. Find out about their skills for yourself. You will find many in SEO who are professionals and want to help not hinder.

The best and shortcut for finding that whether the person is capable doing SEO or not.. is to check their own ranking..

Check whether they themselves ranks or not for their keywords..

If they do then you call talk further otherwise there is no point in wasting your valuable time..

ewebac, I'm not so sure about that. How do you know which keywords they optimized for? I just checked your rankings for [seo tips & tricks] because that is in your signature file and part of your domain. You weren't ranked in top 100? I prefer checking client website rankings vs the rankings of an seo firm. If they are ranking for seo, then they are probably spending too much time on that instead of the client services that they are paid for.

Default Low barrier of entry

It is easy claiming to be an "SEO expert" because of the low barrier of entry in the SEO and digital marketing field. Anybody could read a few articles regarding keyword research, learn the on-page side of things, spam a few sites to build backlinks and be considered an SEO.

However, to really be an expert is a different beast altogether. I have read what feels like so much but yet I am pretty that it would probably make up about .1% of the valuable stuff out there. Probably going to take a few years before I can actually claim to be an expert but I know my way around for now.

I agree, there are a lot of seo experts out there pretended to be an expert but if you really think seo is an easy job, no it's not. A lot of brainstorming and research (depend in you niche) to do to become a successful and to rank a keywords in first page in google.

Seo can be learn by anyone. Business owners should know the basic seo for them to be aware how seo works in this arena.
