I do underwriting on my local NPR station and it works very well. The underwriting is really very similar to just a normal radio ad. Initially, I went into the radio advertising more to create awareness for my company than for actual sales. Nevertheless, the ROI has been better than virtually any other advertising I have done. Spend a lot of time working on your message and spot. People will definitely remember a distinctive ad on the radio.

BE at lots of events and places where your potential audience is
Be seen be heard be involved
Get out and become part of the community you want to listen to you
Think about supporting the right charity
Be visible
Do outside broadcasts
Go to your audience do not expect them to come to you or find you.

The advert will come naturaly

The trick is not to try and sell Radio Advertising. Try and sell solving a problem for their business. Clients don't want to spend money on advertising.... but they do want to shift stock, recruit staff, make the till ring like a morris dancer at a disco.
