The pre-SEO research is getting pretty significant. We try to eliminate much of that by asking the client questions about their SEO history and whatnot, but there is always more to find.

We are also noticing a trend that the monthly research and analysis for each campaign is catching up to the hours of research performed at the beginning. Even for accounts that are performing very well, the research ensures that everything we did yesterday will be effective and remain relevant tomorrow. Its not so much algorithm chasing as it is just ensuring that quality work continues to be effective.
