Default Business Direction

I want to start a business selling simple, intuitive, web-based business applications. I currently have an employee timeclock application for small businesses.

Hoping to expand out into more things like work-flow management, and internal communication systems. Any suggestions on how to move forward?

I might be interested in the time clock if it's any good…where can I find it?

It sounds like you are a developer.

If it were me, I would think hard about trying trying to find a good marketing/sales/business development person who would be willing to work with you. Depending on the size of your company, you could consider hiring someone or you could think about finding a business partner.

Sales and marketing is such an important part of any business.

The key to moving your business forward is to figure out which targeted niche of people will really benefit from your product offering.

Begin to think about who your targeted user will eventually be and what their current time clock-related complaints and gripes may be.

One group that comes to my immediate attention are project managers, industrial/organizational psychologists, and industrial engineers.

These people are usually the ones interested in workflow improvement and such.

So it should be your goal to understand what it is that they are looking for in a time clock application.

Perhaps you can begin hanging out in online forums that cater to project management or industrial engineering conversation or even attend some of their networking events.

I'm sure that you understand that the time clock application industry is a somewhat competitive industry.

Have you figured out how you will position your application against your competition?

Best of luck to you.

One idea: Instead of individual apps, bundle a package of them as one. Essentially a small business productivity pack.

For marketing, rather than going direct to businesses, why not let network VARs do the selling work? You concentrate on development of new apps and let them sell the package and configure for clients. You can bundle the apps on a pre-configured app server or even a VM.
