Default Google's question

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knew the reason why google changed the number of links linking to the site. For example, a few days ago i checked the site which had more than 2000 links found. When I checked today, it was down to 700. Is there any reason why google had such a huge change in the number of links linking to the site?

Thanks....

Google's back link reporting is notoriously unreliable, some would say absurd. Whatever term you prefer, in any case it's not useful for finding out how many sites are linking to yours. Typically Google displays only a fraction of the back links it knows about.

Most likely, your back links are still there and Google just isn't showing them. 1300 links disappearing all at once would be rather unusual if you obtained them in a natural way. However, if you participated in a shady link exchange scheme (just a theoretical possibility, no offense) and the entire network was banned, then it could happen.

How do you know for sure? Check your site's rankings for your most important search terms and compare them with the rankings you had when Google was showing 2000 back links. If your positions remain largely unchanged, there's nothing to worry about. If your rankings dropped significantly, there's indeed something wrong with your back links.

i agree, google doesn't want seo's to have any hint on how they rank pages. and from my experience in seo, google tend to show more relevant links than irrelevant ones.
use other bl tools to check ur links.

You should use Yahoo to check your backlinks. Google will almost never show accurate backlink information. Also remember that Google has many different data centers and sometimes these datacenters are not sync'd up properly so that could be a cause of this glitch. Another possible cause is that you had a large % of your backlinks coming from similarly looking pages. From time to time Google will filter out these similar pages.

Most likely you were seeing results from a different datacenter.
