In two words it's making your website visible for Google and people on the net.

I define SEO as a series of steps you take to make your website more visible in the organic, non-paid search results of search engines. So when people search on Google, for example, for your product or service your website appears in the search results.

WPamplify helps small businesses amplify their WordPress websites by combining SEO, blogging, lead generation and Webmaster support.

Default optimisation

years ago, in school, part of our English grammar tuition was to take a full page of waffle and rewrite the salient points in a single paragraph: précis.

optimising content enables a search engine to index the most pertinent words and phrases.

of course, apart from the improved readable content for people and google, there is also meta content and, especially, each page <title> to consider.

There are two types of optimization:

1. One that has already been mentioned, increasing the chance that your web site will rank high enough in the search results when a given keyword is searched for.

2. The other is on site optimization. This is structuring your site so that it either captures a visitor's contact information so they can be marketed to over and over or results in a sale. Most web sites are essentially brochures and do not sell.

For maximum results, both should be given high priority.

It is getting your site in a position that the search engines know who you are have indexed your site and then displays your information at the top of the first page when a customer is looking for your products or serves.

Search engine optimisation is many things, it's an art and a science. SEO is creative, technical, logical and opportunistic!

The aim of SEO is to maximise targeted types of valuable traffic to a website from search engines by improving the visibility of said website in Google organic or unpaids SERPs. Traditionally this has meant aiming for number 1 or the top ten positions in Google but SEO has evolved and now a SEO needs to be more a marketer than just a tech geek!

SEO means you need to be concerned with high positions in Google for relevant keywords, analysing competition, traffic and analytics and ultimately converting traffic into sales.

In the end, Google success come down to quality links from real websites, good content, and good syndication networks be they automated or human. SEO is not free, it can take weeks and even months or years to see the fruit of your labour and there are no guarantees.

It is however, potentially the most rewarding online marketing effort you can make for your business.

I disagree, optimization or more specifically search engine optimization is simply getting your website found (preferably near the top) in the search engines.

Website structure is website structure, you are right on track with the fact that structure is important and most sites get it wrong. But still it isn't optimization.

making your website in top searches. let's say the people will find this keyword "Call Center Outsourcing Services". In the search result you will see the top 1 website in the search result, that would be the target in good optimization.

A regular link (I consider) is a one way link, an example is if I link to your website, that is a regular link

A reciprocal link is a two way link, an example is if I link to your website and in return you link to mine.

Of these the "regular" or one way links are the best.

As for a future link directory - I've never heard it.

Also I think you are confusing regular linking and directories, there are many directories, such as yp.com, yelp, magic yellow and probably thousands more, all will list your website for you, some charge and some are free.

One way to find directories that are good to be listed in for your niche, is to do a Google search for your niche and see what directories are ranked in the search engines. Make sure you get listed in those and then work on the others as you get time.
