I am very new to this, would you mind briefly explaining the difference?

I had given up on directory submissions as they seemed to make little impact. Then one day I had a large order and tracked it back to a listing of mine in a small, low traffic directory. I then started to see various sales tracked back to directories.
Seeing that it appeared some people are actually using the directories for what they are intended (to find info) I renewed my interest in them.
One sale per 100 directory submissions per year. Times this by thousands of submissions, well, the math talks.

I google my keywords and see all the directories that come up on the first page and then join them so my business is listed as well.

In a previous website experience i used to add my link to many free directories but it was not very usefull. That's why when i've created my new websites i've prefered to be more concentrated on html code and forum/blog links.

Directory submissions do play a crucial role in link building purposes.
Every small bit matters. But many give less importance to it as it is time consuming and requires a lot of patience(for free submissions).Submitting to different directories from same IP can also be harmful.
