Default New Article - Why You Need Custom 404 Pages

Authored by: Simon Heseltine

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/sim...-404-pages.php

A Snippet:

One time, when working with an in-house IT manager I was told that his site didn't need 404 error pages because no-one should reach them. I politely explained to him that 404 error pages are needed precisely because people and search engine spiders will reach them, regardless of how well he'd developed the site.

Easy to do, just make a custom page (for example, "error.html"), then set:

ErrorDocument 404 /error.html

in your apache2.conf file (that's what it's called in linux, may be different in win) - that's assuming error.html is in the top level web directory, otherwise adjust the path accordingly.

Wow, never really thought about that. It definitely makes a different impact as opposed to a standard page. For me, it would still make me retry the page again instead of giving up already.
