Default Anyone use an e-book

I've started working on an e-book about starting an ecommerce business for minimal cost. The idea is to present a problem such as what software to use, then present an answer showing how we can help. The e-book would be free and readers would have to right to send it to whomever they choose.

Has anyone tried something like this. Any success? I guess the hardest part would be getting people to read it to begin with. Any ideas on where I could advertise/promote it?

I think it's a really good idea. Are you planning progressive series of e-books, or just one?

Because you are targeting local businesses, you could contact your local chamber of commerce and ask them to make the e-books available for download at the chamber's site. You may have to make the versions you provide them less "commercial" but you could still include your contact information.

Another idea would be to go to your local county clerk's office and purchase a list of newly registered businesses. You could do really inexpensive direct mail pieces (cards) promoting the e-books and how to download them from your site.

Of course, don't forget to check out the local advertising options Yahoo and Google are rolling out.

Oh, and as someone mentioned in another thread about PDF's that I can't remember, be sure and provide html versions of the e-books on your site for added food for the search engines and visitors.

Default Two more ways to promote a free ebook

I offer several PDFs/ebooks from my site. For the most part, I've publicized them by (1) offering as an incentive to sign on to my newsletter, (2) announcing them in the newsletter and (3) advertising them on my own site.

You could also announce your ebook in a press release, then distribute through a service like prweb.com.

Another thought is to list it in free directories. Do a search for "free ebook directory" and you'll get several leads.

I offer a free e-book with a purchase and that's increased my sales from very very few to very few. So I'd call it a success. My newsletter signup is awfully slow - so an e-book incentive to sign up would be helpful too. Have y'all had good results with an e-book incentive for a newsletter signup? Do you find that your newsletter subscribers end up converting?

hi there,
Sounds like you have found a nice Niche,
half the battle won.
I would suggest you do a supply/demand search if you have not done so already.

Regards,
Tanna

I'm more technical than business. Any suggestions on doing a supply/demand search?

I'm completly changing the Databuilders web site. I'm focusing on small/home office business that want to build a web site without spending a lot of money. Please take a look in the new member forum for a sneak peek and let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Wink One additional idea

Hi Databuilder,

I think the idea of giving away a PDF is great.

You have some excellent suggestions here already. Here is another idea. Partner up with another entrepreneur and do some cross-promotion. Here is how it would work:

One partner creates a PDF and both partners provide it to their site visitors. For instance, I am going to offer a colleague's PDF as a free download whenever someone signs up for my newsletter. It's free promotion for her business, and I can offer my visitors something of value. Since we are in related but different businesses, it is a win-win.

Best,
Anita
