I think it's dangerous ground - if you buy an irrelevant domain and you keep getting visitors bounce in and out Google will pick up on the content being irrelevant and drop you down the list into nowheresville!

Best advice - start from the ground up and do it the hard way - at least that way you can be sure the traffic that hits the site has been driven into it by you (or rather you have as much control over it as you can!)

It may bring some unnecessary traffic to your website if you buy expired domains.
