Its good to hear your feedback guys, and I'm glad you've made yourself at home and have found it helpful for your business.

Nutty, I'm guessing you feel a little better getting it out :P

From a business standpoint, here is my take -

very very low barrier to entry + high potential return = everybody and my cousin does it

From a seo standpoint, if I may -

I agree with the previous advice of getting referrals and checkin em twice ... but even that is not foolproof by any means. One scenario off the top of my head, an seo may have great results taking on an established website that hasn't been optimized well but if you are a new business the challenges and scope of your project are different and results may vary. Comparing apples to apples based on checking references is almost impossible based on my experiences with providing seo services. First and foremost, it does come down to integrity and relationships. You need to figure this part out firsthand ahead of time - and then also talk to their other customers. Are they even like your business? Not the keyword market, but ... size of business, years in business, age of website, competitiveness of markets. So often references are self serving imo and can also misguide small business owners who are just looking for affirmation so they can move on to their next task at hand. imo.

It's important to do your homework prior to utilizing an SEO expert. And, we agree, that it is a good idea to learn some basic SEO concepts on your own first prior to outsourcing. Also, be sure to know what methods they will be using to get you to the top of the ranks. Make sure it is white-hat, or approved, SEO methods!

To familiarize yourself with SEO, I highly recommend a free web publication called Beginners Guide to Search Engine Optimization, put out by SEOmoz Labs. You can download the PDF or read it online.

You'll know a lot more when you're done reading it, and if you hire an SEO company, you'll have a better sense of what questions to ask and what they're doing on your behalf.

Default I agree

I totally agree with you on this, it seems that everyone around me is an SEO expert! But eventually those "playing" at SEO will loose clients when the clients realise they dont actually know what they are doing!

In the meantime, it is a shame for the customers of these "internet cowboys" though.

Looking forward to more ranting

Welcome Michelle, where abouts in Malaga are you?

I started this rant because I had, had enough one day and was fed up with hearing all the rubbish from a client that had been said to him by a ............ let's call him a "numpty"

I am in Monda, maybe we know one another from Twitter, Facebook etc, Malaga is such a small place with social media

Results are what count, but by the time many customers realize they have been had, it's to late.
