Default My Space For Backlinks?

Does anyone use My Space for backlinks and does it help on ranking with the search engines?

I do not use myspace personally. Looking at a friends profile, I see their profile page is indexed by google but the link to one of their pages goes through a redirect link using msplinks.com. I do not think it helps with backlinks directly based on this, but the exposure within myspace may be helpful to get your site exposed to others.

Just like any other page on the web, your MySpace profile needs to have some links pointing to it from other sites. For example, http://www.myspace.com/searchrank currently has 11 links pointing to it from 5 separate web sites - at least according to Yahoo!'s Site Explorer. The sites/pages that are linked to from the profile also register so yes inbound links from a MySpace profile are recognized and counted, if the profile itself has some links pointing to it and is indexed by the search engines.

How much that actually plays into ranking again is like any other page on the Internet in that it will depend on what kind of authority the MySpace profile has in place.

Oh and before it gets asked, the best way to get a MySpace profile indexed (after you create a static URL like the one above) is to link to it from your own site, such as in your "About Us" section (as I did) and then add it to sites like MyBlogLog, Mashable and the like.

I just set up a myspace for the heck of it, and was curious about the same thing. Might need to link to it now. Thanks.

Myspace/hi5 profiles are easily accessible by anyone unlike in facebook. At face book you cannot view someone's profile unless the profile owner approves you as a friend. So comparatively Mysapce and Hi5 is considered as more back link friendly.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I have been working on the links in My Space but I wasn't sure if it would help with back links or not.

Default I can't prove anything

but we're on page one of google (for curved-vision.co.uk on the keywords "presentation skills training") and one of the things I've done is to get profiles on quite a few of these social networking sites.

We did other things too, but this was one of the biggies.

Links to and from MySpace are not something I see a lot of, and I can't recall ever seeing a MS page ranking in the top20 for a term. I do know of a couple MySpace pages that have a considerable following of friends and decent PageRank but will also point out the people who have these pages spend a good bit of time keeping them up and adding new content.

IMO, unless you are in a very specific niche where research shows your demographic heavily using this site or you're giving away valuable free stuff from the MS page - it's not worth the time for a link.

Myspace will surely give you traffic but I'm not sure if it helps in SERP because the links in Myspace is not direct.
