Default Refer A Friend Software

I'm evaluating Refer a Friend options. I'm torn between two different ideas.

There are applications that will go into the users webmail and send invites to everyone.

It's automated and easy for the user to participate in. But it's also intrusive. And if you're not a social site like FB, I'm not sure that it's appropriate.

There are also software scripts where the user hand enters email addresses of people they think will be interested.

They are not intrusive, probably more appropriate to a makeup sales site (doubt many men care about my site), but they also require more work on the user's part.

I'm torn but leaning towards the latter.

My goal is to have my mailing list grow 10-fold by the end of this month. Since I started 11 days ago, that seems doable. (Going from 70ish to 700ish, or at least 500.)

I would definitely go with the non-intrusive one. People are even getting upset with facebook for privacy issues nowadays. Also, the customer has the option of which friends they want to refer which may be better for you.

Do you get people's permission before doing this? The idea of going in to someones webmail and mailing all their contacts just sounds wrong.

I would always not prefer supporting efforts, which are done in intruding in the security of a person's privacy. Yes, the latter move might require effort from the users part, but for that, you can offer him or her with a deal, which can entice him to bear the load for you.
