I'm mot sure what you are referring to. Are you getting this info from a tool of some sort? Knowing that may help us explain things better to you.

hey jim,

i try to hit your site a few times a week. thanks for the "props". i'm learning more about the whole keyword thing and how to title my articles.

submityourarticles.com (or something like that - is a great site - they've got interactive tools that give you pointers about different aspects of writing articles online).

as for the tool Logan - it's Good Keywords.

if you click on one of the tabs (forget which one, not at home right now) - it shows links...they are MSN, Google, Alta Vista, Alexa.

it also shows Alexa Ranking.

on other tabs it counts the keywords on the each page. for instance, on my home page, i've increased the terms "real estate investmenting" from 4 to 14through titles of my articles and the front page terminology.

but i just don't know exactly what a MSN link is? or google link etc...

Alexa Ranking -

Basically alexa has a toolbar which 'some' people download and use. Alexa takes information about what websites these users visit and ranks sites based on their popularity. For example - you can check any site. Here is Yahoo which they report as #1 = Alexa Yahoo Ranking. This data is fairly accurate for sites between 1 and 5k or 10k but after that it isn't. Additionally the rankings can and are easily manipulated or skewed based on other things. Typically not something to worry about much really.

Google Links, MSN Links, Yahoo Links

What this is referring to is the search engines count of the number of backlinks going to your site. (1 = a link from another website TO your website) For example, if you search google for

link:noobdogs.com

no results

now for another example check yahoo.com

link:yahoo.com

One note with google's backlink search, and this is important. Google only show's you a sample of backlinks to your site. Only a portion, never the complete universe of backlinks to a site. They do this purposely. So, most seo's will monitor backlinks using yahoo and/or msn to gauge links from other sites to theirs while making the assumption that google's backlinks indexed to the site are similar.

Google doesn't show any backlinks from other website's to yours. Another factor with google, their results are delayed by a few months usually.

Backlinks, and the quality which isn't measured or discussed here, are important because search engines not only consider the content on your page but also who, how many, how popular links are from other sites to yours.

All of this information can be checked directly yourself, without using the software - it just pulls these searches - as with the alexa and google backlink example provided above.

i find that altavista generally will count more links than yahoo and msn will give me credit for. i would use yahoo's or msn's link count because i value their algo alot more since they have bigger market share

as logan said, google is not very informative with their "sampling" of backlinks so i just ignore them

Its not really in question if they do. Its commonly known/accepted/verified with Google that when searching backlinks the results are delayed. Google's algorithm and rankings factor in backlinks at a 'different pace' versus what is displayed within the results of a backlink search. So, you may have backlinks that are being factored into current rankings - but until they update those results they are not going to display. Note, when the results are fresh/updated - your rankings (and all others) do not all of a sudden change. That is because the links are all ready factored into the rankings. Additionally, Google does only show a sample/portion of the total number of backlinks to a url.
