Default Questions About Yahoo Explorer

I have been told that Yahoo explorer is the best tool to see how many websites are linking back to your site.

Yesterday, I had 91 pages indexed and around 380 backlinks. Today I have 15 pages indexed and 148 backlinks.
I have heard that sometimes this is inaccurate, but this seems extreme.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Does anyone have any ideas as to whats up?

Default Yahoo Explorer

Actually Yahoo Explorer is not used for single purpose of knowing which or how many pages indexed and backlinks for site. Even both these we can find easily by entering query in the Yahoo.
For Links we can use linkdomain:www.domain.com -site:domain.com
For Indexed Pages: site:www.domain.com

As for as Yahoo Explorer is concern here is the details why it is used.

Yahoo! Site Explorer is a tool that lets you access the information we have about a site's online presence. You can see which sites and subpages are indexed by Yahoo! Search, track sites that link into webpage, and view the most popular pages from any site. Use Site Explorer to:

* Find which sites and subpages are indexed by Yahoo! Search.
* Find inlinks or pages that link to any site or any page.
* View the most popular pages from any site.
* Submit and track feeds for your sites.

You can get even more detailed information and greater ability to manage a site or its URLs when you authenticate the site. You can:

* Find what subdomains of the site known to Yahoo!.
* See other information that Yahoo! detects about your site, such as language.
* Delete URLs that you don't want indexed by Yahoo!.

As for Yahoo exployer is much better than Google as Google doesn't show the exact number of links, but Yahoo is more accurate. As for your case, it may be that your links were removed because they were not good.

Yahoo is reliable in checking backlinks while comparing it with some other local backlink checker tools yet we must not rely on it even. Moreover i think no one can really say about the exact reason why it shows only first 1000 results.

Most of the smaller backlink checkers actually end up piggybacking on Yahoo. if you'd rather have a service with their own data look into Magestic.

While it does show typically many more back links than Google's LINK: operator or WMT, Yahoo! Site Explore (like LINK: at Google and WMT) is just a sample of your back links...

Does anybody know why Google has the least amount of stats when it comes to backlinks?

I always wondered this.

Partly to protect you. It prevents your competitors from seeing your backlinks.

But mostly to protect Google and the integrity of their SERPs. By preventing you and your competitors from seeing a lot of their backlinks, they cutdown on the data available to sites to be used to manipulate the SERPs by preventing the reverse engineering of their algorithm which is very "link dependent" like the algos of most search engines.
