Free Photoshop clone: GIMP

Free FTP client: filezilla

Other free tools I use from time to time are Faststone Capture, Easy Thumbnails, Webswoon, WinHTTrack, Pixie, Inkscape, NVU

Microsoft Expression Web offers a free 60-day trial and there is one called GNU (never used that one though.

But you should have a basic knowledge of HTML to help you out. The WYSIWYG editors can be good but know what they are typing will always be good

Default sourceforge.net - source for opensource tools

An excellent repository of opensource software, web applications, content management systems, design tools etc. etc. Visit Source Forge http://sf.net

Using the combination of Fireworks and Dreamweaver are really your best bet for managing 5 websites. I realize it doesn't answer the 'free' question, but the small investment in these two software tools will make your projects easier to manage. Because Dreamweaver and Fireworks are integrated it really does help in terms of design, code and content revisioning. Combinations of free html editors and graphic editors, like the GIMP, will not give you this degree of "compatibility".

On a side note, in terms of content images, if you want a quick editor, visit PICNIK. We teach our clients to use PICNIK when adding small images into their content managed websites.

Cheers.

Default Self Help Suggestion

Hi:

www.vtc.com has some great tutorials on web building (along with a long list of other tutorials). For a small monthly fee you can access the entire library or you can just buy the tutorial you need.

Sounds like you are in the novice "help me learn fast" stage and this may assist you in that task.

Xenu's Link Sleuth is a great little spider to help find broken links on your site, redirects, etc.

Although not software itself, script archives like Hotscripts.com are worth their weight in gold. Many great scripts, programs and apps are free, robust and easy to install and use.
