Default Newsletters: A Great Internet Marketing Tool

Thinking about starting a newsletter..

"HTML Web Pages allow for lots of graphics and text, and the design possibilities endless. As with HTML Email, the reader has to view the newsletter online. Another advantage is that an HTML Web Page doesn't have to be sent as an Email attachment. Cost is low too; really it's just your time to develop the newsletter."

Make sure your newsletter is interesting. If it is just a bunch of advertising, you are wasting your time.

Two most common format for ezine publishing and marketing are HTML and plain text. PDF is nice and allows more flexibility but it will only decrease your response rate. People spend very short time per e-mail, so they may want to open and quickly get what you have to offer in the newsletter.

PDF is good for reference file. I suggest this format for whitepaper.

Also, I never used Microsoft Publisher before. But Frontpage has been known to generate a lot of rubbish code. If you really design your e-newsletter using it, consider having it cleaned up first before you sent it.

Don't forget to test how different mail apps view your newsletter. You may be surprise with how the same email could be rendered differently on different apps.

E-newsletter publishing and design is very broad topic to cramp into a single thread, but knowing your choices may be a good start if you already have a plan in mind.

Default Another newbie question

Is there a limit to how many dumb questions a newbie can ask?

I think I'm on #8. ;o)

What are HTML Web Pages? What is the difference between HTML Email, and HTML web page sent via email?

"HTML Email can only be viewed online, it's economical to produce and you can get a little fancier with it.

HTML Web Pages allow for lots of graphics and text,"

Nope, seriously if you are asking I can guarantee you there are 100s of other people who also don't know. The difference is you have the guts and determination to ask! Keep at it and welcome aboard.

On to your question, its a good one.

When sending an email their are two types. One is plain text. The other is HTML. HTML stands for hyper text markup language which is the basic programming of a web page. It makes it all pretty and provides for layout of the page. A person views the web page through a browser. While reading this page, if you go to the top of your browser window and select "View" from the menu... then select "Page Source" that will open a window with that webpage's HTML. Its probably scary looking to you and you don't need to learn it necessarily... but it can be helpful in understanding to know that when looking at a webpage it is generated by HTML. Note, HTML can provide images, colors, layout and text.

Now back to your newsletter question. When sending a newsletter, it can be sent as just text or HTML. The emails you send to friends are just text. They don't have colors, images, layout, etc. Alternatively you could create an HTML email (using HTML to incorporate images, colors, etc). This would include your 'text' also.

An example of an HTML newsletter would be ones from this site received.

I hope I didn't confuse you, and if so .... keep your questions coming
