Default Employees Who Don't Want To Advance?

We just had an experience where an employee didn't want to advance to a new position we offered him. He is comfortable in the role he has now and has no interest in learning a new skill/making more money.

Have any of you faced a similar issue?

I wouldn't say it's unheard of. I can recall a few instances where employees I had were not interested in advancement. Once when a manager ... my best employee was a superstar, but because of his age and situation at home he was perfectly happy with the schedule and wages he earned and had absolutely no interest in more responsibility.

Do you need the employee to do more?

I'm not saying it's wrong or right, but I know some employees who have been doing the same thing for decades and both the employee and company are content.

I think you're absolutely right - some people just don't want more responsibility.

It can certainly be frustrating at times. You think you've found the perfect candidate for a position only to learn they have no interest. And the search continues...
