Exclamation Blog Spam: 5 Examples To Watch Out For

I've set up my blog so that all comments have to be approved by me before they are published live. The reason I approve all comments first is to prevent any offensive comments from making it online, as well as any spam.

For example, I deleted the following comments just this morning...Blog Spam: 5 Examples to Watch Out For.

Won't it be easier to use the Akismet plugin and the spam detecting softwares like conditional CAPTCHA in case you are using Wordpress? (practically everybody is blogging via WP nowadays).

I love this smiley

I don't like or use WordPress, CAPTCHA is not 100% effective, and I have my blog set up exactly the way I want it.

Glad to know that you are happy with what you have been able to do .. most people won't be able to say that from their hearts.

Anyways, I read one of your articles (a list about niche blogs) today and liked the list a lottt... I even commented over there. Do let us know in case there is anything else interesting that you'd like to share.

I still think that it is better to approve every commnet personally as this is the best way to recognize a spammer. Hard work, but it is worth it.

I couldn't agree more. That's exactly why I don't use spam-detecting software. I prefer to handle spam comments personally. That being said...to each their own.

I agree totally approving comments etc is absolutely vital in maintaining the intregity of your blog
I had one highjacked in the past with 100s of posts for porn, drugs etc and it takes time to get shot of them

I believe the ideal scenario includes a combination of the two. Some comments are so obviously spam that an automatic tool can detect them easily (multiple links in the comment, weirdly colored formatting, etc.). This should be then corroborated with daily manual checks.
