Default Getting Your Blog Seen

I have someone that would like me to set up a political blog for them that they think will help them get recognized in the political world.

This person does not have a website, any social media account, etc... This person is almost 80 years old and does not quite understand the massive quantities of info the internet contains.

My question is, how can I convince this person that he needs more than just a blog or a website in which to post his "essays". I tried to explain to him that merely doing this is like going into the middle of a forest and tacking his essay to a tree. He thinks I am just trying to get more money out of him (which I am barely charging anything).

Any ideas on how to show him how the whole social media & blogging thing go together. I have showed him all the ins and outs, he just gets confused and shuts down! ha

Blogging is no different than anything else in the world that's used as a platform, and in order for it to succeed you need to put in a lot of work and effort. Explain to him that although it may be cheap to start and maintain a blog, if he wants it to take off it will require some marketing. Just like buying a paper and pen is cheap, if you want your writing to be recognized it's going to take a lot more then just to write.

Hi businesskickoff! Welcome!

One of the first questions I ask my clients about getting a website established online is, 'What's the purpose of the website?'.

Believe it or not, small business owners have a hard time answering that question. After all, they have lasted this far without one, right?

Anyway, have you considered asking just that? What's the purpose of the blog? I think the blog can stand on it's own. I fully understand you want to do the best you can and see it 'take off', but have you considered that maybe he/she just wants to 'see it online'??

Also, have you considered showing them a Google search for the 'topic' they are working on?? When you do that, I think it will be clear to show them how many other sites/pages are in the same 'space'.

On the other hand, this project just may be one of those things that are on their 'bucket' list.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

BeTheBest is spot on. Most people have no idea of their purpose on their website (or actually with a lot of things!).

The best thing is to find out their purpose then tell them how to accomplish that, then when they start talking about other weird/pointless ideas bring them back to the purpose. You will probably have to dig to get their true purpose.

Sounds like a nice guy, just think at 80 he probably doesn't care about being famous, making money etc etc you do mention he wants recognition, get him involved in political forums or something.

A lot of people just want to do something for the sake of it, like many people write a book but never market it. Generally you may want to avoid them as there is no way to help people who won't help themselves. If you don't think he will meet his goals just don't get involved he will only blame you later if he isn't happy.

It's really hard to explain to the old man that has no knowledge in online marketing... well for now i can say good luck to you! I know you can do it in a polite way!

Default i don't see the harm

You could setup analytics and show him the traffic(or lack of traffic when no SEO is done).

If he just wants to write and post his essays on a blog, I say, why not? But if he expects a whole lot of people to read them, that's another matter.
If he's a good writer and people enjoy what he writes, he can comment on a few well known blogs and probably get a following... but it all depends on how good of a writer he is and if people are interested.
But I don't see any harm in trying.

I agree - it may be that the client is just wanting a vanity blog and setting up a simple blogspot or wordpress entity may be enough for her.

Let her have a go at this for a while, and if she wants some serious traffic see how dedicated she is to quality content and you can go from there.

She will soon discover nurturing a blog through that first year is no easy process... But good luck anyway.

In such situations i always try to convince a person to make a try and to compare results. He will not believe your words, he must be showed the particular result. This is the only way!

If I were you I would let him have a blog and speak his mind as everybody can do it and may be he will be lucky to find some people who share his points of view
