Default Twitter, Info Clutter, And Small Business

Quick background: I do social media for local business on the side, and while we utilize Twitter, I'm one of the few social media guys that doesn't go full steam ahead with it.

I realize Twitter adds value in many ways, but for some reason I am waiting on "the change". I don't know what it is, but I think Twitter will need to segment in some way to funnel the information differently. It's great for following "that smart guy" you like, but I wonder how much information and quality content is never, ever seen because there is just too much to digest in its current form.

Am I the only one that feels this way?

I believe that too. But the question is how to manage so many variables at the same time when the boundaries between such variables (niche, importance of information, relevant profile, sharing time, etc) are questionable.

You have hit the point right on. I feel the same way about Twitter. I have not tried all the add-on tools that try to alleviate this problem of Twitter; but may be there are tools out there that can get you what you are looking for by filtering all the noise.

With the advance search options in Twitter you can now search out different keywords and find relevant tweets to the market you are looking for. If you scroll through the lists you can see tweeters that aren't known but provide quality information.

Great observations. I feel the same way about twitter. I've used tools to alleviate twitter problems but even then twitter is pretty hard to manage (perhaps because it is so big).

I use twitter to get people to my facebook page or newsletter because I don't think I can maintain a relationship on twitter. Its just too noisy for that.

Anyway, some tools that have helped me with twitter are:

NutshellMail: Emails you a list of people who've started following/unfollowing you

Hootsuite: I use this for following twitter chats (which are generally a good way to meet prospects)

And now for my favorite tool:

ReFollow: It helps me find my followers based on a whole bunch of criteria so I can connect with them. (for example, I might look for people who've @mentioned me before so I can say Hi and further the relationship more) This is a lifesaver for me

I got to admit, when I first saw twitter it kind of confused me. The information just keeps rolling, kind of hard to keep track. Took me some time to finally figure out how to utilize its strengths to use it for business. But I still don't think that it help as much as other people would like it. Yes it does have some benefits like Social Media interaction with your customers and fans and can be good for promotions and other stuff.
