Have You Read A Newspaper Lately?
You know, the physical paper that once was on almost everyone's doorstep.
For me, it had been a while, a long while.
I stopped at a gas station a few months ago, on a Monday. I decided to go inside and pay first because of the credit card skimmers and network security breaches several major retailers were experiencing. As I walked in the door, the newspaper rack caught my attention. I continued to the counter and waited in line. Standing there, thoughts of my high school government teacher surfaced. He made us read the paper and would give tests to ensure we read the entire paper. I remember a time when all the Sunday papers were gone by Monday so I bought one and walked outside. I was thinking "What information would be in this paper that I couldn't get on the Internet?". About that time, a section fell out. I picked it up and noticed something strange, a smell...perfume! That answered my question real quick. I thought it was funny, strange but funny.
The next day I got an e-mail. My high school government teacher had passed away on the previous Friday. This was starting to creep me out now. I was worried the paper had been thrown away and now I wanted to see if an obituary was in there for my teacher. Nope, nothing. I ending up reading the whole paper (Dear Abby included) just for the sake of respect.
I found an interesting article about NoMo phobia. People get anxious when they don't have their mobile devices because they're so dependent on them. Some people check their phone over 300 times a day. Anyway, another article was about a challenge to go without your mobile device for a week. I thought about it for a second and realized something. If I had bought the paper on Sunday and taken the challenge, I wouldn't have known about my teacher until after the funeral.
Has anything like this happened to you?
Have you taken any challenges you regret?
Have you read a newspaper lately?
Dan
