Default Need Advice. Starting An Ebay Business Based On Things I Am Making Myself.

I am a cabinetmaker which isn't as literal as it sounds. I can make anything out of wood, including cabinets.

I want to make an ebay business based on making furniture, and then listing is on ebay.

I looked on Ebay, and more than 90% of the auctions did not sell. One person told me to solve this problem, list 5,000 items, and then hope to sell 100 of them. I don't have the money or the resources to make 500 items much less 5,000.

I don't want to jump in head first before I know what I'm doing. How am I going to make this work. I think the only way this is going to work is if I sell at least 75% of what I make.

On a side note, the cheaper items seem to be selling for a lot more than expensive items, which really isn't the goal here. The idea of a cabinetmaker is you make really nice, expensive, hand made stuff. The cheap crap is supposed to be made by a CNC machinist and churned out in a factory.

Being able to sell, for instance, a wood adirondack set for $1500 (which is the going rate for the kind of stuff I do) is vital.

Would their perhaps be a better way to sell this stuff than ebay? I'm kind of stuck on ebay as I don't have to make my own website and I can stay away from the dreadful "made to order" jobs.

To view only what has sold on ebay go the category you are interested in then select the check mark on the left menu to view [Completed Listings]. That will give you a better feel for what is actually selling and for how much.

The only way to find out some of this stuff is to test it yourself. While I agree in not putting up thousands of listings, put up a few with your work and see what does happen. That may tell you more than anyone can here. Test, test, test.

Do people know to look at ebay for the type of $1500 Adirondack chairs you make? Probably not, and that becomes an issue if they don't know to look for it at ebay in the first place.

I'd start by viewing completed sales of wordworking products, then try to hone in on those things that are already working for others using ebay and selling woodwork.

You may need to redefine your business, change is sometimes necessary. For example butcherblock cutting boards might be something to look into where it is a small product, low price point and easy to ship.

Welcome aboard
