Default SEO Software/Tools

Is there a good tool for finding out where a website ranks for specific key words without having to check manually?

and also, is there a tool that can tell you how many times per week or month a specific keyword is searched for on Google, Yahoo, and/or Bing?

Hi Amir, for tracking rankings try DP's free tool

http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/

You will need to sign up for an API key with that.

Regarding keyword research, not exactly. They don't provide that information publicly. You can use the adwords keyword tool for estimates ... but take it all with a grain of salt. Amir, I personally run a ppc campaign on an engine to gauge the number of impressions my ad gets and then correlate that as the number of searches being done. For example, run a Google search only campaign for the US using exact match settings for your keyword. If your ad is setup to always show and be on the first page, then that is a good representation of how many searches are being done based on my experiences.

this is likely a dumb question but what does an API key do? I already have an Adwords/Adsense account and I noticed during the sign up for the API code that they want billing information. Any info would be appreciated.

It is against google's terms to run automated queries on their site, as is needed to check rankings. An API gives you access to run queries against their site in an approved manner. There typically isn't a cost, but I guess that billing info is requested for those who run more than the free allotment provided.

Amir, keep in mind that ranking reports aren't really accurate anymore due to "behavioral searches". For instance, if someone has a google account and is logged in when they search, Google modifies the search results based on several factors, including the person's search history and IP address.

A good example... I have a client that offers per diem and travel nursing positions in the region where I live. If I do a search for "travel nursing" they do not pull up in Google results. However, if I am logged into my google account they pull up #3. I'm sure that is because Google is tracking my IP address. If I go into webmaster tools I see "travel nursing" as a top search query with a average position of 3. If I ran a ranking report, however, that result would not show up.

Much better to use analytics & web stats now to determine the success of your site.

I believe SEO Elite handles this. It isnt a free application but well worth the small license fee.

I believe if you make full use of Google Webmaster, you can get Keyword info from there
