The main role of Canonical tag is to signal search engines that which of your duplicate content is actually primary and you want to be ranked.

For example, you have 3 web pages for 3 same t-shirts but with a different color.
Let Red, black, and blue. Now all these 3 pages have the same description and specification about the shirt except the color. Now Google can think that these three web pages have duplicate content and Google can penalize all three pages or may choose a particular color page to show in the search result but which is not your preferred color.

To resolve the issue Canonical tag is the savior. Let black is your preferred one for search engines then you should do the following :
Black color page's head - <link rel="canonical" href="URL of black color page" />
Red color page's head - <link rel="canonical" href="URL of black color page" />
Blue color page's head - <link rel="canonical" href="URL of black color page" />
Now Google understands that your preferred page is black among others and other pages are legitimate duplicate pages.

Another vital purpose of canonicalization is to pass the link juice to the preferred web page.

Hope it will help you a bit to understand the topic. If you have any query then you can write to me.

Canonical tags tell the search engine which content of website is original and which are duplicates. Search engine gives credit to an original piece of content. You can use rel="canonical" tag to avoid duplicate content issue.

If you are using same content for more than two pages of your website and you do not want Google to take it as duplicate content, this tag can help you in that.
You can learn more in detail about canonical tag here in this guideline: https://moz.com/learn/seo/canonicalization

It would be better if we explain how this cannonicalization help our site pages duplicate issue and not the redundant definition from the source.
