Default New Window For Links?

Wondering what others do with links in their blog posts. Do you have them open in a new window, or the same window?

So far I've been doing:

- new window for external links (I want them to go there but not forget to come back and finish reading)
- same window for internal links (I don't want to clutter their browser with my pages)

Seem reasonable? Or is my thought process off on this?

Thanks!

Elsbeth

I'm still working on my site, but I plan to do the same thing, for the same reasons.

What you say would be the way I do it...

There may be a few exceptions when I open my own internal content in a new window, but I do not want external links to take my readers completely away from my page.

For our site, I always make sure for links to be opened on a new window/tab. Why? To lower down bounce rate. If your visitor opens a new link immediately upon entering your site and it leads to an outside page, then it will count as a bounce rate.

I understand the bounce rate issue, but this must only matter to you if you work in the marketing department. You need that number to be low, so you look better. When in reality, it's a flawed statistic in this way because they are simply going to another one of your pages, either on the same or sub domain.

I do what others have said. I open any external links in a new tab, not a new window or in the current window. This way they are still in the same browser and can see your site as a tab and are more likely to return.

I agree with opening an external link on a new tab and internal links on the same tab. Leading to too many different windows disrupts user experience; opening links of one site on a single tab keeps the navigation directed. That's just my opinion

This is exactly what I do as well.

All external links should be opened in a new window as to retain your visitors on your site. The only time I can see to deviate from this would be when you're sending to a promotional/affiliate offer. I can think of a few instances where I would want them to only have that offer open.

But, for the most part, I think you're looking at it correctly.

Now that you've said it, i guess you're right. It is a flawed statistic if you look at it that way. However, just following things that will look good in the eyes of Google.
