How far in advance can you extend domain registration eg if due to expire next year can it be extended now ?

Absolutely. The domain registrars aren't going to turn away more money.

The longest registration period I have seen is 5 years, but if you call up your registrar right now, they'll be more than happy to extend.

If you have multiple domains, godaddy will let you do it in order to consolidate all of your domains. I am not sure about anyone else, but you are just adding time, so I am sure that most will do it whenever you want.

Go Daddy isn't the only one. I think it's safe to say most if not all registrars will extend your domain for 5 to 7 years out (although I've even seen longer).
