There are many marketing and advertising tactics used to increase business sales. Some of the popular and powerful techniques are

1. Use various Internet marketing tools.
2. Social sites marketing (Integrate website with best social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.)
3. Mobile marketing (Mobile loyalty program like Pirq, Elite, Belly, etc)
4. Keep in touch with the existing customers and make them feel very special by providing discounts and rewards.

He may be referring Search Engine Optimization. Also Google Adwords is an Internet marketing technique. But I am not sure it can be called as a tool.

These generic lists of "Most popular and powerful..."can be useful for discovering new techniques and strategies. Even vague lists can help promote your creative juices and get you searching for new methods.

I have also found that improving what you are already doing can have good effect on your business. You could seek the help of a consultant or a business coach (ahem!), but there is much you can do on your own because there are only three ways to increase sales--

1. Sell stuff to more people.
2. Sell more stuff to the same people
3. Raise prices.

Most marketing is about #1 - Selling to more people, yet, that can be the most expensive strategy and one that takes the longest to bear fruit.

So, the question arises - Are you selling all you can to your existing customer base? Much can be gained from #2 - selling more to your existing customers.

Consider
a) calling or e-mailing regular customers before their usual repurchase date.
b) offering a discount for prepurchase for later delivery.
c) suggesting ways your customers can use more of your product.
d) explaining the benefits of a customer having more of their staff using your product.
e) offering a discount for purchasing in bulk.
f) offering a discount for contract supply (x-amount per month for x-months.)
g) offering extended payment (buy now, pay later.)

And so on.

There's a lot you can do to increase sales without spending a dime on advertising and promotion. Of course, you will want to advertise and promote your business, but don't overlook simple, in-house strategies for adding to your bottom line.
