I used to be an ODP and Zeal editor...and an About.com editor. These projects can be a lot of fun, if you've got the time to volunteer. Anyone check out Zenome and volunteer yet? Anyone taking the time to try and get their sites listed?

We were looking for posts on Zenome and saw Jenn's post 6073 in February asking if anyone was signing up to be a Zenome editor. So we decided to write with an update.

We hope to establish Zenome as a search tool that finds the most relevant pages on the web for any given search by using human editors and rankings. It is social software --a web community driven project -- with a bit of a twist. We make use of initial broad categories for herding information, but allow users to suggest new categories. Also, we will use advertising revenues to drive the project and to compensate editors.

Editing is the key to success at this phase of the project and we still need editors in many categories. As Jenn's post says, this can be a fun thing to do, and we invite specialists and knowledgeable amateur fanatics to join us. Our editors will be rewarded with medium- and long-term revenues, not a huge amount of money, but a small way for us to give back to the community.

We hope the excitement of being in on the ground floor will give our editors and indexers a sense of ongoing involvement with this project. The overall aim is to reflect the sponteneity, creativity and knowledge of the community.

Once we get enough sites indexed, the search by relevance will start self-organizing, This is really our raison d'etre and with use this feature will become more and more efficient.

At the moment, Zenome is small but has received some press coverage in Canada, locally (Montreal Gazette) and nationally (Globe and Mail). We hope people will check us out and give us feedback. We would love to hear from you if you have any thoughts about the project.
