Default New Article - Hide And Speak: Google, We Don't Need No Stinkin' Google!

Authored by: Jennifer Laycock

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/laycock/010160.html

A Snippet:

A common complaint of small business owners these days is how powerful Google is. A bad algorithm shift or a spidering problem can leave a small business on the verge of bankruptcy in a matter of a few months. While it's easy enough to tell people that they need to diversify and stop relying so heavily on Google, that can be hard for companies to put into action. That's why I decided to put myself and my marketing sense to the challenge once again with a new business and a new article series.

Default Good Experiment, Bad Business Practice

While I can appreciate what you are attempting to prove, you could easily get your point across by launching an informational site about Bentos, and block the search engines to that site. But to block them from the business site is quite silly, unless you want to retard your business opportunity. Its like deciding to learn to ride a bike with one leg, sure it can be done, but its probably going to be painful, and what's the point? Not to mention that if the bento idea happens to be a good one, you are allowing your competitors ample opportunity to jump in with the SEs and thump you pretty good. That is competitive strategies 101.

Finally, once you have proved your point with an informational bento site, you could use it to increase the credibility of your bento business site. Makes no sense, best of luck.

You must not have read the article because if you had, you'd know she isn't advising readers to block the major search engines from their sites.

She is creating an article series around a specific challenge she has set up for herself.

In the last business challenge Jennifer used an info site. This time she chose a product site with the challenge of having to build it without the major search engines. Of course she wants to make it tough... that's part of the point. If it wasn't tough, it would be a boring article series and there would be little to learn.

She clearly spelled out the point...

"While it's easy enough to tell people that they need to diversify and stop relying so heavily on Google, that can be hard for companies to put into action. That's why I decided to put myself and my marketing sense to the challenge once again with a new business and a new article series."

It's a learning experience she is sharing with her audience.

Um, yeah... that's obvious and it's why this article series is set up as a challenge. This is not meant to be a series on competive strategies 101.

Again, I don't think you actually read the article because you don't even understand the basic premise of what Jennifer is doing and why. Read the article and you'll discover she is creating an article series around the launch of a site while tying her hands with the major search engines so she is forced to use other marketing methods to grow the site and compete. Other people can take away ideas for their marketing from her experiences.

You make a really good point. Thus far, I have put ads on Google and Yahoo via sponsored listings, but I don't want to rely too much on those sites. I'm going to be signing up for [url removed] when they finally launch, but I'm looking for other ways to advertise for my site. If I don't use Google, what else should I do?

Default great idea - great article

Of course this article isn't saying this is how all businesses to do it - its a fascinating experiment. I plan on following and using many of the (other!) suggestions as far as blogs, etc
