Since it's hard to build a good link strategy if you don't actually understand why links are so important, I thought that I'd put together a new series of articles that examines why it is that links matter so much to both search engines and to Internet users.

At the SearchFest conference last week, I sat in on the Linkbuilding Basics session and was really shocked at some of the questions people were asking afterward -- that's some anecdotal evidence showing the confusion that still exists about links and the "why"s and "how"s of linkbuilding.....

I think it's really easy for us to forget just how little some people know about SEO and link building and such. It's so ingrained in us...but then I have a conversation with someone that brings me back to reality.

Like my aunt, who actually uses the Internet almost every day and is a pretty darn intelligent woman (ran the city income tax department up until a year or two ago.) She had no idea what Google was. She had only ever used Yahoo! to search.

Sometimes getting back to basics is good.

Good points!! I have to agree, it is very important. To put it into brick and mortar terms... opening your shop at the end of a culdesac is not so good... well, if you rely on traffic for revenue. Not having links to/from your website is like opeing your website at the end of a dead end street.

I'm looking forward to the series... I'll wait till your done to share a little tidbit I observed over the past 2-3 years. Something that is so easy and it's like sending up a flare to the search engines. (grin)
