Actually, the keywords META tag is of very little value for optimization. It's ignored by most major SEs.
The description META is useful to a degree, as -- if it includes the relevant phrase in its text -- it's often used as the "snipped" displayed in the search results. It's value in the actual ranking algorithm, however, is debatable.
The robots META doesn't affect ranking (unless you use it to prevent the SEs from indexing the page in the first place

).
There are a whole bunch of other META tags that serve various purposes, most of which have nothing to do with the SEs at all.
Some people mistakenly include the <title> tag as a 'meta' (in reality, it isn't a META tag at all), and that's where some folks get the idea that META tags are important. The <title> tag
is important for SEO/rankings, as well as for telling potential visitors what the page is about.
But there's a
whole lot more to effective SEO (and designing a Search Engine Friendly Website) than just META tags.
