Default New Article - Three Final Checks for Your Optimized Pages

Authored by: Stoney deGeyter

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/degeyter/008433.html

A Snippet:

If you are always optimizing pages then you probably know how easy it is to overlook small, but important things. It's the small things that, when over looked, can often throw the biggest wrenches in the works for an otherwise well-optimized site. Here are the three most commonly overlooked tasks when uploaded new or changed content to your website:

Hi Alan, probably the best free broken link checker is Xenu.

http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

You download the program (safe to do) and then enter the domain to be checked. It then crawls all the links and reports any errors or broken links found.

Great article!

I agree, its always good to test, test and test some more. LOL!

And also, if you can have another person check everything, it would be really helpful too.

Spell check and broken links are prerequisites to optimized pages, not final steps.
HTML validation is an option. Many web sites listed in the first google and yahoo results have lots of errors reported on html validation. Google and Yahoo too.

Not to quibble over semantics, but to say spell check is a PRE-requisite means that you spell check BEFORE making edits. I would strongly urge one to spell check AFTER edits are made. The point of the article was that this step is often missed, especially when only "small" changes are made to a page. And no matter how many people you have proofing, a final spell check should be completed before rolling out an optimized page. Same goes for broken links. And while HTML validation isn't required for rankings, neither is good spelling or grammar. We don't consider it an option. Not every page can be made to validate 100% but the validation process is an important one to ensure there are not errors in the code that might screw with the spidering process.
