Default Website Awards

Does anyone know where you submit your site to obtain website awards?

There used to be directories of sites that gave out site awards but all that I know of died out. Most of the sites giving general awards were just doing it to gain incoming links and increase their own traffic when a recipient posted their award graphic. In other words, anyone could "win" the award.

With that said, finding a large site covering your subject that gives out awards could prove beneficial if they promote their awards. For example, I know some About.com guides used to give out a "best of the year" type awards. The guides would announce the upcoming awards, build interest with their audience, and then provide a nice write-up of the yearly winners. This could drive some highly targeted traffic to a site.

Ok, I know Lisa and most of you already realize all that, but I just wanted to use About.com as an example.

On the reverse side of the coin, you could always set up your own award to hand out.

Anyway, I'm tired and rambling (what's new??) but here are a few sources for you to check:

I thought about doing this on my new site...the most creative ideas to use certain materials.

I guess I was looking more for something to stand out that shows what my customer service is all about...

Reasoning:

My biggest seller is the ribbed placemat sets. The popularity of these have soared my sales to a whole new level. My main compitition are large sites with money I only can dream of. Thing is...they are selling substandard merchandise that most people don't know the difference unless they have both pieces to compare (or don't care because they are so cheap). It's a very cold site with no "about us". Customer testimonials just rave how low their prices are and how quick their shipping was.

So...I thought that if I had some kind of awards on my site, it would make some people lean more my way.

Maybe I need to go another route...any advise would be appreciated!

How about the always amusing "Webby" Awards? Heading into their 9th year ...

Lisa,

This isn't really an award, but it is something along those lines to consider:

Internet Retailer Top 300

http://www.internetretailer.com/top300/

"... ranking of America's 300 largest retail web sites based on their Internet retail sales."

As your business grows you'd have an idea of what type of sales it would require to be selected for the Top 300. I image it could also be quite handy if there were other companies similar to yours on the list. You could begin investigating what they've done to grow their business.

You could always just make up an award image lol

Robert has said it all though with the whole awards game. They are effectively dead other than a few of the mega million dollar costing websites with the latest and greatest coding etc.

Awards aren't what they used to be.....Upon a time, they were a good reciprocal link exchange (basically) with you as the winner getting a pretty gif to stick on your site. You'd be better off getting on to top 100 sites instead, as far as getting a g backlink and a little traffic. Don't get discouraged about competing with the big boys. If you do have a single outstanding product, you may want to throw a few bucks into a google adwords or overture campaign. Exploit that great product to draw in visitors and hopefully keep them coming back. Offer other ways to draw them back as well. Perhaps a frequent buyer program, discount coupons for future purchases for first time buyers, newsletter (if applicable), etc.

As far as award sites, I have just the one recommendation: www.goldenwebawards.com

Not bad as award sites go. As far as credability with consumers that you sell quality stuff, maybe a BBB recommendation. Almost everyone is familiar with the Better Business Bureau, so perhaps that would be another option.
