Creating an original email list might be a little bit tedious but if you succeed in doing it, then you'll be able to maintain (almost a lifetime) healthy relationship with your subscribers. Also, a genuine email list will build a kind of trust within your subscribers about your brand since it involves asking for their permission before they sign up to your website. This, in turn, helps in building your brand name among a larger mass of people.

I agree with MyLaunchKits. The only way for you to build a genuine email list is to identify first your target market.

If you offer service or product with physical location and your target are the residents/small businesses within the community, you can send them a postcard with a coupon or voucher to get them coming to you.

Make sure that there's an email field at the back of the postcard so that when they present it to you, you can ask them to enter their email addresses.

If you are targeting global, create a newsletter where you announce that you are giving out a free ebook or pdf with information or tips that will be useful to your target market. Anyone who is interested will have to enter their email addresses in order for them to receive a copy of the ebook.

Default ways to build email list

Try online and offline methods
Sign ups and contact forms from your website can help.
Also you can use social media,
for ex " If you wanna stay updated with latest whitepapers sign up ..."
Train your sales teams to collect emails even if they are not
closing the deals.
Events also help in building a list.
Every department can actually contribute their bit.

In order to create a genuine email list it will require the consent of the person or company rather than spamming emails in which will go only in their spam folder.

A good place to start would be with a professional email marketing company, such as MailChimp (there are many more)

Collate all your email addresses and get them into your desired software and start with a re-confirmation of that list - if you do not confirm that the people on the list want to be part of your mailer then you will run into problems; marked for spam, high rates of bouncing and unsubscribes.

You can add a page to your website where they can go and join your list - this would be my preferred action, one by one invite your email addresses to join your newsletter/mailshot list.

Many stale email addresses are flags when using any software, basically they know if your list hasn't been confirmed and is made of stale addresses, apart from of that though, your reports will be a mess and not make much sense.

Good luck, once you have confirmed your email addresses your life will become a lot easier and at least you know the people you are sending to actually want it - nothing beats a well targeted audience.

I build my lists into categories, especially if I am running newsletters for companies who sell products of various different brands, my newsletters would be offers for product A and this would only be sent to list A (in my email software programme) - product B could be a generic mailshot so that would go to main list (which contains everyone).

Know your target market. Once you know, you'll be able to determine what would knock their socks off! When you know what they want, go where they are and offer that thing completely free in exchange for an email address.
