I would suggest you learn more and more things regarding writing. That way, you will have a competitive advantage over any other writer.
Learn SEO, learn sales writing, learn copywriting....but mostly, learn to improve - not to focus on a category!

You can always tell SEO writing from a mile away with very poor spelling and something is 95% of the time being sold...

Truth be known, I agree with them... in part. What people are proclaiming as SEO copywriting is nothing more than keyword stuffing. They have no plan for including keyphrases in their text, they don't take time to figure out which keyphrases work with what pages/types of copy/messages and they do nothing more than shove them in wherever they might even have a chance of making sense. THAT is not SEO copywriting.

SEO copywriting does not detract from the sales message IF it's done right. Not to toot my own horn, but I just had a client who manufactures treadmills, ellipticals and the like put up a page of SEO copy that shot his conversion rate up to 312%. Still wanna tell me that SEO copy doesn't sell?

Here's my stand: *IF* SEO copy is written the way it should be written, it does its job with selling and with aiding in rankings.

So where do you stand? Is SEO copywriting evil?
I agree, SEO Copywriting is not inherently evil. It becomes evil when people write pages ONLY for search engines. And they disregard the obvious fact...
Search engines don't buy anything

I think most SEO fanatics never ask themselves a simple math question... Would you rather have a page 1 listing, with 1000 visitors a day, and a .0% conversion rate? - or - A page 2 listing, with 100 visitors a day, and a 10% conversion rate?

So absolutely, spread some keywords throughout your copy, and optimize it so the search engines know how to index it, but always write for your human visitors.
