Search Engine Guide Blogger

Default Google Not Indexing Pages

Authored by: Jill Whalen

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/wha.../0727_jw1.html

A Snippet:

I created a site map for a client's website. MSN has indexed many of the pages but Google has indexed only 2 pages and I believe Yahoo has done only 5. What gives?

Hi Jill,

I just finished earlier in the week setting up with Google's Adsense and on Tuesday, I ran into their Site Map. Web designing is fairly new to me and I didn't quite understand what they meant by setting it up. Can you give me the, "Site Map for Dummies" version?

Thanks

To get properly indexed, you simply need to get inbound links from relevant websites. If they are popular, so much the better.

Getting a sitemap won't get you listed without any links. Sitemaps only inform the Googlebot of your pages, but it also takes your site popularity (PR) into account when it picks the sites to crawl (and include in its index).

A Google Sitemap is a list of URLs of your pages in the XML format - a format that only Google can understand.

An ordinary Site map is a page with a structured list of your main site pages, probably accessible from your site footer.

Sorry, I am not Jill =)

I just got done submitting a google sitemap in .xml format a couple weeks a go for one of my sites and I don't know that it helped at all, but it wasn't hard to do at all either. I think I will update it as I add content, like twice a month.

It has a PR3 right now. I hope to get that a little higher.

Thanks for sharing your direct experiences with Sitemaps Chane. Its good to hear how others are doing with it. You shouldn't expect much improvement really with rankings just inclusion, obviously (i think you know this) pr is related to links. Sitemaps is really just a tool for inclusion, not pagerank or rankings ... since a page is ranked similarly if it is indexed via sitemaps or via links, etc.
