Search Engine Guide Blogger

Default Supplemental Results in Google

Authored by: Jill Whalen

A Snippet:

The good news is that as long as your content isn't the same as elsewhere on your site, being in the supplemental results at this time is really more of a glitch on Google's end than anything you need to worry about.

According to Matt Cutts, it may also be an issue of having too many reciprocal or irrelevant links on your site. I have witnessed this happen to one of my sites that was using the co-op link exchange program. You may have to remove spam from your site to get back in good terms with the new googlebot so it will visit you more.

I wonder though if all those supplemental pages are going to get reincluded in the main index. It seems to me that one of the reasons behind 'big daddy' was to reduce the size of the index and remove some sites that didn't need to be there like pages with duplicate content.

From what I am gathering the pages in the supplemental index are being held at the moment for later spidering and while many will probably find their way back into the main index I'm not sure all will be.

This is all just speculation on my part, but the feeling I'm getting from everything I've been reading about the update.

Hi Jill,

I don't understand your comment:

'You do want to be sure, however, that each bit of content on your site is reachable via only one specific URL. If it's reachable by other forms of the URL, .... '

Can you explain what 'other forms of the URL' would be? Isn't linking to internal pages from various other pages from your site advantagous?

Thanks

Hi seeking. Yes, linking to a single url from many different places is good/okay. As an example of what is being discussed and what you don't want, consider a situation where page.htm has links going to it as www.yourdomain.com/page.htm and yourdomain.com/page.htm (w/o www). That is a basic/common scenario where two different urls link to the same page.
