Pinterest can be a decent way to get traffic to your website.
Ways you can get traffic:
*follow as many people as you can that are in your niche. If you are selling hats, follow people who are in the fashion industry. Like their "pin" and thank people when they like your stuff
*stay in your niche. If you are pinning hats most of the time and then pin a bunch of dog pics, it won't make sense to your followers who are expecting to see hats.
*follow others in your same niche and like their pins. See how they respond to people and mimic the best pinners.

the site will soon roll out profile pages that have been redesigned to look "more beautiful" and to display users' influencers more prominently. An iPad app is also in the works, he said, although he declined to give a release date

I enjoy Pinterest a lot, and all the search tools indicate that the primary audience there is women. One way to divert traffic is after you Pin something, go into Edit mode for the picture and then replace the link with your website URL. The picture remains but the URL changes.

Some truly impressive numbers from this article -

In March the site registered 17.8 million users, according to Comscore, a 52% jump in just one month -- and it isn't even open to everyone (would-be "pinners" must still request an invitation to join).

In February Pinterest drove more traffic to websites than Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn (LNKD), and YouTube combined.

For any of you using Pinterest for affiliate links, it looks like the site has removed all those links in response to a spammer who claimed to have made $1,000 a day from pinning such links. Of course, Pinterest seems to be evolving its business model every couple of weeks, so it's possible the affiliate links will come back in another form.

If I were you, I would give this site a shot. It has been reported by many bloggers/marketeers that a huge spike in traffic has been seen in their site after posting something that went viral on this site. It is like digg, and reddit, but in a way I like this one a bit more. But, as comments before have said, the quality has to be great on this site, otherwise you will likely get little to no traffic to your site.

Give It A Shot
First off, I too have heard that the demographic is for women.
This is quickly changing, its now the 3rd biggest social network and its still in BETA.
I feel like Pinterest is kind of like when my buddies and I would throw parties at college, we'd invite girls, cause if you get the girls guys will find their way to it.
Its quickly changing and I'm looking forward to seeing how much traffic we can get from it.
