When small business owners hear about social media their attention immediately goes to Facebook and Twitter. They think of social media as a place where customers go to gossip and complain about their businesses or where business owners can go to publicize their products. This limited view doesn’t do full justice to the potential social media holds for small businesses. There is lot more to social media than just Facebook postings and Twitter broadcasts. Below we show how you can use those and other tools in interesting ways to improve your business.

Social media is the future.

As far as the complaining, if you're a business owner, don't ignore this or even look at it negatively.

Use this as a chance to redeem your business directly to the customer. And if not, at least you know what you are doing wrong to improve your business practices.

Think about it, by simply addressing concerns people have you are making your product or service better and better. And for you small businesses, this might save you time and money on doing surveys.

"But people keep posting all negative feedback, I know some people like my product"

Recommend that satisfied customers post their positive experiences on your Facebook or Twitter page. Possibly offer some type of coupon or other incentive to have people remember to post their experience on your page.

Point is, social media is NOT going away anytime soon. Jump on the bandwagon and harness its power.

I think a lot of businesses tend to forget to be “social” when dealing with social networking. Yes you can advertise your products, but you should also be gathering information about your product from the users. Take in what they like about it and what they dislike about it. This sort of information and feedback can be very beneficial for improving your product.

Completely agree - perhaps the strongest aspect of social media sites such as facbook is that they provide unprecedented access to information about your target audience as well as providing a platform to promote your own business. - it is a two way means of communication which is what makes it so effective.

Aside from Twitter and Facebook, the latest social media for business promotion is Pinterest. Being a member of Pinterest allows you to promote pins or images and create a community of online users with the same interests. It is also an effective way to increase your potential clients.
