Default New Article - Hyphenated Domains and Long Registration Periods

Authored by: Jill Whalen

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/wha.../0215_jw1.html

A Snippet:

Does it help my Google ranking to register my domain name for years in advance? The guy at the hosting company insisted it's true, but a car salesman will also say you need the anti-rust coating for only an extra $1,000.

Lightbulb Length of Domain Name Registration

Domain name registration does not have a profound impact on your search engine rankings. The ultimate answer may never be known, as Google and other will not openly discuss their algorithms that determine your ranking (for obvious reasons). There are a few dozen other factors that are so much more important that length of registration.

Length does play a part if your domain registration is public. Anyone can visit www.internic.net/whois.html and find out how long your domain is registered. From a trust perspective, registering a domain for 5-10 years looks better than registering one for a year. Why? Because you give your customers confidence (perceived or real) that you're going to be around for awhile to support them after the sale. Short registrations give the impression you're looking for a quick buck, or worse yet, running a scam.

Think about it this way. If you were going to marry someone and the wedding vowes said "until I change my mind" rather than "till death do we part" how confident would you be in your potential spouses intentions? Same thing applies to online marketing.

One point to remember when registering a domain that will effect rankings is your domain name. While I've seen some post that say the name is irrelevant, this is not true. Search Engine rankings are primarily based on key words and content - the "spiders" will look at your domain name and then the corresponding content on the page, so if you're selling roses you should definitely have the word roses in your domain name and good content on your site about roses. A domain name like www.isellroses.com will favor better than www.isellenterprises.com although both sites sell roses.

Hope it helps!

In my opinion hypen domain do have some impact on seo. As search engine matures the algorithm will consider every little tiny part of everything on the net. technology has improved greatly. chips can already store billions of stuff. so search engine algorithm will try to be as precise as it can be. even plural and singular will make a lot of difference. a lot more websites will have chance to get listed on the top 10.
