Default WPG and Google's API Key

Authored by: Jill Whalen

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/wha.../0117_jw1.html

A Snippet:

We have WebPosition Gold and I can't remember if it was you that said
we need to get a Google API key to use the program. I was wondering
why and how it works.

Question- If Google punishes sites that run automated ranking software- then conceivably couldn't some one run missions on whole whack of keywords for competitors sites? Anyone can run them whenever they want- what's to stop a competitor from running daily reports on other's site's? Would you be in a postition to cry foul? Or somehow how to prove you didn't run the reports?

Never used WPG, so no person experience with bans, but I see to recall that what actually happened was that Google blocked the IP address of the person running the searches...meaning that your site isn't affected, but that you can no longer search on Google for a specific amount of time.

In other words, banned from searching, not from ranking.

I am wondering if the problem is no click through on search results. Google will slightly devalue a site for the search terms when it appears in search results and is not clicked through or only clicked for a second or so.
When running WPG you are running mass "search" with no click through. I supect this is what it is. The API stops this effect.

Lisa,

Not sure if you caught what I wrote or not.

Google doesn't penalize the site that you are researching with a rank checker, it penalizes the actual individual trying to search.

So say I run 1 milllion queries on Google to check ranks on all my clients sites. Google says "knock it off" and bans me from having the ability to search for 24, 48 or however many hours.

Thus, the penalty is on the searcher, not on the search result.

Or I'm just totally missing what you're saying.

Hi- sorry Jenn- yes I understand that Goolge will block your IP . What I was wondering was if the issue of no click through came into play I don;t think it could because I could just run zillion reports on competitors site.
